When someone hurts you, you can hold on to anger and resentment — or embrace forgiveness and move forward.
Forgiveness is the deliberate and intentional decision of letting go of a debt incurred by another. Hurt, resentment, anger and hate is the fruit of unforgiveness.
The benefits of forgiving someone.
Letting go of grudges and bitterness can make way for improved health and peace of mind. Forgiveness can lead to:
- Healthier relationships.
- Improved mental health.
- Less anxiety, stress and hostility.
- Fewer symptoms of depression.
- Lower blood pressure.
- A stronger immune system.
- Improved heart health.
- Improved self-esteem.
What forgiveness is NOT
- Forgiveness does not mean you have to forget what happened. People who have been terribly abused, neglected, and victimized don’t forget their traumas and they don’t need to. They can learn to forgive, yet remember.
- Forgiveness does not eliminate the consequences. There still may be repercussions even beyond the forgivers control. Or cutting off relationships for the betterment of those involved.
- Forgiveness is not a feeling. Forgiveness is a Pardon granted to the offender regardless of how we feel, even if we are still upset or angry.
- Forgiveness is not Selfish. We forgive out of our love for the Almighty and we are GRATEFUL FOR OUR OWN FORGIVENESS and Pardon from the Lord
- Forgiveness is not a separation of trust. Scripture gives us many reasons to distrust those who are untrustworthy (Luke 16:10-12). Reconciliation can begin only after confession and repentance.
- Forgiveness doesn’t mean you’re minimizing your experience. By engaging in forgiveness you aren’t saying “it’s okay…it wasn’t that bad.” Not at all! You can forgive yet still admit that the trauma was very real.
- Forgiveness doesn’t mean that you’re a chump. Forgiveness is not a sign of weakness, naiveté, or foolishness.
- Forgiveness doesn’t depend upon the other person apologizing. Sadly, you cannot expect that the person who wronged you can fully understand or appreciate that what he or she did was wrong. They may never admit that they did anything problematic at all. That’s okay, because you can engage in forgiveness for your own benefit, not theirs. You don’t need anything from them to forgive them.
- Forgiveness is a process. Or rather, forgiveness is instantaneous, but getting over the hurt, pain, resentment, and anger may take longer and require work to let the healing take place. Removing the toxic emotions are core to spiritual healing.
The primary function of forgiveness is to reconcile the sinner to a productive relationship
