Introduction to John Foxe and his Book of Martyrs

The REAL “Foxe’s Book of Martyrs” is a 3000 page, 3 volume set. It’s almost IMPOSSIBLE to find a copy for under $700. The books in “christian” bookstores are HIGHLY redacted (only 4% of John Foxe’s book). The Catholics have edited the original to try to hide their crimes. The Genuine copy was published in 1684, it is now out of print (from what I could find).

Foxe’s Book of Martyrs, also known as Actes and Monuments of these Latter and Perillous Days, Touching Matters of the Church, is a work of Protestant history and martyrology by John Foxe, first published in 1563 by John Day. The book describes the sufferings of Protestants under the Catholic Church, with particular emphasis on England and Scotland. The book was highly influential in those countries and helped shape lasting popular notions of Catholicism there. The book went through four editions in Foxe’s lifetime and a number of later editions and abridgements, including some that specifically reduced the text to a Book of Martyrs.

The book was produced and illustrated with over sixty distinctive woodcut impressions and was to that time the largest publishing project ever undertaken in England. The illustrations were newly cut to depict particular details, linking England’s suffering back to \”the primitive tyme\” until, in volume I, \”the reigne of King Henry VIII\”; in volume two, from H \”Queen Elizabeth our gracious Lady now reigning\”.

The book is divided into two parts. The first part deals with the history of Christian martyrs from the early Christian era to the reign of Henry VIII. The second part covers the reign of Queen Mary I of England, during which many Protestants were burned at the stake. The book is written in Early Modern English and is over 1500 pages long.
